Music in his blood

Michael Godin has been involved in music and broadcasting in Canada since 1969. When he was 16 years old, he had a high school radio station and even interviewed John Lennon during his Bed-In for Peace at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal. Michael was music director and disc jockey with CFQR, CFCF, CJFM – all in Montreal; and CFOM in Quebec City. His voiceover work includes being the voice for two Mattel Toys television commercials, the “He-Man Power Sword” and the “Skeletor Skull Staff”, which ran for two years in the United States. He joined A&M Records Canada in Toronto in the fall of 1975, as Director of Artist and Repertoire. Later he became Vice-President Artist & Repertoire. One of the highlights of his career at A&M and is the signing and development of mega star, Bryan Adams. Michael also worked with Lance Freed, President of Rondor Music International, the music publishing division of A&M Records and son of Rock & Roll pioneer Disc Jockey, Alan Freed.

In 1986, he moved to Vancouver on the West Coast of Canada and started Michael Godin Management Inc., a full service artist management group, a music publishing company (West Broadway Music and East Broadway Music) and a consulting company. One of his clients was the multi-award winning recording artist and songwriter, Paul Janz.

As a management consultant, Michael provides a variety of services to broadcasters, media and arts companies, individual recording artists, and managers. Michael represents Canadian pioneer disc jockey Red Robinson, one of the seven original DJs in North America to play rhythm and blues and rock & roll music on radio, Red has been recognized by many organizations including the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Rockabilly Hall of Fame, Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and more.

From 1986 to 1993, Michael was a National Director of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), the organization presents the annual Juno Awards, Canada’s network televised music award show which recognizes excellence in recording achievement. He was also Chairman of the Board of the B.C. Chapter of CARAS, which for ten years staged the annual West Coast Music Awards. At the end of his tenure, he was presented with his own Juno Award for outstanding service to the Academy. In 1998, on behalf of CARAS, Michael hosted an Internet first, the live online video presentation of the Juno Awards Backstage and conducted interviews with many of the winners.

From 1993 to 2005, Michael also managed the Western Canada operations of NABS, the National Advertising Benevolent Society, a non-profit charitable organization which helps people from the advertising, marketing and media community across Canada who have encountered illness, injury, unemployment, or financial difficulties, and raised hundreds of thousand of dollars for the charity.

1997 heralded Michael’s return to on-air broadcasting when he launched Treasure Island Oldies as its producer and host, Treasure Island Oldies is a pioneering show and one of the world's longest running weekly radio shows on the Internet.

Dear Treasure Island Oldies Listener,

Well, here’s a little about myself. I’ve been drawing, coloring, painting, basically “creating” since I was very young. That creative side has always been a part of me and now I have extended it to other areas of my life like cooking, gardening, decorating and yes, even exercising! You have to be pretty creative to continue to exercise and make it fun! I am married to the most wonderful man in the world. His name is Jeff and we have two adorable children, Olivia and Cooper. Olivia already has the creative bug in her! Check out Olivia's page and see how good this ten year old is! It’s amazing! Cooper turned eight in March and continues to amaze us everyday! Here’s my philosophy...

I believe we are all like trees! Think how many shapes, sizes, colors, and ages of trees there are. We are lucky because every year we get to shed our leaves, lay dormant for a while, if we need to, and then emerge with brighter leaves and bigger, better branches than the year before to tackle the weather and elements that are thrown at us. We are constantly changing and growing and for that I am grateful!

I have been blessed with a creative spirit, a beautiful sense of humor and a great deal of common sense. I am dedicating my days and thoughts to passing on these qualities to Olivia and Cooper. In the fall of 1999, as I was shedding old leaves for the winter, Jeff and I were given some unbelievable news to deal with.  Cooper, our son, was diagnosed with autism. Wow! That will certainly knock you over and tear you from your roots! As we have learned more and more about autism, we are definitely in the process of building back those roots; stronger, mightier and more flexible than our first set of roots!

The reason I share this with you is that I donate a percentage of my earnings from the sale of my artwork shown on my website Memory-Tree to the Autism Society of America.  If you wish to learn more about autism please go to my links page.  Memory-Tree.com is also our source of income for the many tutors we have coming to our home, putting the pieces back together for Cooper. Check out Cooper's page and see how well he’s doing! He is definitely our little sapling, growing new leaves every day and strengthening his branches is our biggest challenge.

I am very pleased to have “You And Me And The Big Palm Tree” included as part of the new Treasure Island Oldies website. I look forward to your business and please know that you are helping a wonderful little boy grow into the mightiest tree that ever lived!

Much Love and Laughter,

Ali Knight - Memory-Tree.com

Treasure Island Oldies

May 1997: Treasure Island Oldies started its Internet broadcasting and has become one of the world's longest running weekly radio shows on the Internet. It initially began as a three-hour show, but as a result of listener feedback and demand, the show expanded to four hours in February 1998. From day one, Treasure Island Oldies has been affiliated with the Dowco Entertainment Network, later becoming the Mediaontap Network, with studios  at insinc, Interactive Netcasting Systems Inc., located in the Vancouver, British Columbia, suburb of Burnaby.

It has become renowned for its ingenuity, originality and its ability to play very hard to find songs. The various themed specials throughout the year draw great response from listeners all over the world. Among the most popular specials are the annual Summer Beach Party, Halloween Spooktacular, One Hit Wonders, Wordless Wonders – Instrumental Gems, and the favourite, the Christmas special.

In late 1998, the program was picked up for broadcast on short wave via SWRS, the Short Wave Relay Service, based in Germany. The following year, it was voted the Number One program by listeners of SWRS. It has also been recognized by various online and print publications including ontheair.com, and the Yahoo Entertainment Guide; and is also linked from hundreds of websites around the world. In August of 2000 the show was profiled on the Voice of America radio program, Communications World. There was a feature article on the show in Macleans Magazine, Canada’s weekly newsmagazine. Vancouver’s Global Television News at Six spotlighted Michael Godin and Treasure Island Oldies in a lengthy segment of the newscast.

Treasure Island Oldies is steadily in the Top Ten most-listened-to oldies radio shows across the United States via satellite on MBN, the Mobile Broadcast Network. The relationship with MBN began April 2002. Today you are just starting to hear about this breakthrough for cell phones: listening to music and radio. We have been on the cutting edge of this technology since its inception.

The Program Director of Radio 88 FM in Gothenberg, Sweden, the second largest city in that country, contacted Michael Godin. As a result, Treasure Island Oldies airs every weekend on his FM station since the fall of 2004.

Our Web Site

Months and months of planning have gone into the design and production of the new Treasure Island Oldies website. A great part of the process was deciding upon a ‘look and feel’, one that would convey relaxation, fun, and reflection. These are the same feelings I hope you experience listening to the show.

When doing a Google search for inspiration, we came across the watercolour “You And Me And The Big Palm Tree” by Ali Knight. Immediately we knew it was ‘the one’, so we contacted Ali Knight via her website. We are thrilled at how gracious she was in allowing Treasure Island Oldies to feature her beautiful watercolour.

You can own a copy for yourself (Ali will even personalize it for you). Ali donates some of the proceeds from each sale to the Autism Society of America. Be a part of this worthy cause; order your copy now!

We thank Ali very much for her permission to use “You And Me And The Big Palm Tree” throughout our website and we love how much it contributes to our new ‘look and feel’. We know you will enjoy it as well.
