This week
on Treasure Island Oldies
June 28th, 2009 to July 4th, 2009
We sure had a lot of fun for our
13th Annual Summer Beach
Party. The water was warm, the food was delicious
on the BBQ and the bar was stocked with all kinds of soda,
juices, water and other favourite beverages. And the
Nuts in the Hut
had a good time hanging out on the beach to visit with each
other and listen to some great summer music. Thanks for all
your requests; it was great to play them on this fun annual
special.
Be sure to listen to the show next week for the third of
three specials in a row, this time it's our
Annual Salute to the Music
of Canada. You'll hear records by great groups
and solo singers, songwriters and musicians from across
Canada that in many cases, became stars around the world.
It's one of my favourite shows of the year. As a former long
time director of CARAS,
the Canadian Academy of
Arts and Sciences, the organization that stages
the annual Juno Awards, Canada's own Grammy Awards-type
show, I am very proud of the contribution Canadians have
made and contributed to the world stage. I am honoured to
have been presented with a
Juno Award
myself for my contribution to and support of the Canadian
music industry. And I am proud of my own achievements and
success as Vice-President A&R of
A&M Records with
discovering and signing
Bryan Adams to the label. Another of my Canadian
signings I have always really liked is
The Payolas. The
lead singer Paul Hyde
and guitarist, producer,
Bob Rock were a great team together and scored
Gold and Platinum albums. And Bob Rock went on to become one
of the top record producers in the world. A personal
favourite is Paul Janz,
who I not only signed to A&M Records but eventually left to
become Paul's manager. We had a great run with several Top
Ten singles including
Every Little Tear, but also scored a respectable
Top 40 hit in the US on the Adult Contemporary chart with
the amazing ballad
Believe In Me. So yes, I am a proud Canadian and
always pleased and excited to bring to you the
Annual Salute to the Music
of Canada next Sunday.
It's been a very sad week for major losses in the field of
entertainment. The beautiful and talented actress,
Farrah Fawcet,
died after a long battle with a rare form of cancer. The
King of Pop, Michael
Jackson died at the young age of 50, after a
lifetime career in the spotlight and with more success than
most people can ever imagine. His music will never be
forgotten, nor his amazing dancing.
Gale Storm also
passed away. This talented actress and singer had two really
popular TV series in the late '50s and early '60s. She also
had several Top Ten hits doing cover versions of several
songs including I Hear
You Knocking,
Why Do Fools Fall In Love,
Dark Moon,
and On Treasure Island.
The founding member of
The Seeds, Sky
Saxon, also passed away. You'll well remember
them for the garage rock hit
Pushin' Too Hard.
Let's hope there is a slow down is losing any more stars.
"It was a hot afternoon, the last day of June, and the sun
was a demon."
That's the opening lines of one of the greatest summer
songs of all time, the very cinematic
Summer (The First Time)
by Bobby Goldsboro.
It's our Song of the
Week over at the
Treasure Island Oldies Blog.
Enjoy!
Voice Your Choice
features Bachman Turner
Overdrive from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
BTO charted
several hit singles including these two songs:
Takin' Care Of Business
and You Ain't Seen
Nothing Yet. Which song would you like me to
play? Click the Voice
Your Choice button on any page of the website and
cast your vote. We'll play the song with the most votes in
Hour 3 of our Salute to
the Music of Canada Special next week.
I'd like to take this opportunity to wish all my Canadian
friends, in Canada and around the world, a very
Happy Canada Day!
And to my American friends who live in the United States and
abroad, Happy Fourth of
July! Enjoy your celebrations.
Have a great week.
Bye for now.
Michael
